FAQs
- How long have you been a copywriter?
I started writing local television spots in 1989, when I was at Penn State University. Before that, I wrote my own Kiss songs at 10 years old. - How much experience do you have managing creative professionals?
I've held several management and senior staff positions where I led the creative process for writers, designers, and developers. Together we developed ideas and concepts that became the backbone of our campaigns. I have 12 years experience working with interactive creative teams, with nearly 10 years of working in traditional media prior to that. - What role do ideas play in successful marketing and advertising?
Ideas are the oil that keep the machinery running. Research, statistics, and trends play key roles, but without the constant flow of ideas, and their ability to string together disparate parts to make a new whole, communication would cease. A person has never been inspired by a statistic, only the ideas that flow from it. - What is the answer to the ultimate question of life, the universe, and everything?
42. - Who are your copywriting inspirations?
It's obligatory to say David Ogilvy, but it's true. The ads of Olgilvy & Mather from the 50s & 60s are more than just advertising; they are compelling communication. - What is the primary role of a copywriter?
The only role of a copywriter is to create sales. How he achieves this, of course, is the challenge. She can't go door to door and persuade so the selling tools become ads, commercials, posters, viral, etc. Working as a team with an art director, the copywriter should literally be the sharp point of the creative pencil. The copywriter's task is to revise, revise, revise - distilling the concept until there is no other way to write what has been written. - In trying to reconcile points of conflict between the theories of quantum mechanics and general relativity, why is it not possible to determine the gravitational field of a specific particle?
The Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle states that locating a particle in a small region of space makes the momentum of the particle uncertain; and conversely, that measuring the momentum of a particle precisely makes the position uncertain, thereby making it impossible to determine the location and velocity of a particle with any degree of certainty ... at least on a sub-atomic level. - Do you enjoy working for an agency?
To quote Dorothy Parker: "The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity." In that respect, agencies are also a cure for boredom.
