No! Really! I'm not dead. Despite what my recent activity on this blog would suggest. I'm just struggling with the whole work/life/blog balance.
Should I rest or blog? Should I eat or blog? Should I play with the kids or should I blog? These are the tough questions of life.
Anyway ... it's been bachelorville around here for me since Sami and the kids took off to the Outer Banks. That's OBX to all you obnoxious bumpersticker owning suburbanites. As expected, the dishes are piled high in the sink. The grass looks like a jungle (although that's much more the weather's fault than my bachelor sloth).
Without the family here, I barely crawled out of bed in time to catch the bus this morning. It's only for the fact that I work in big-time corporate America now that I've even bothered to shave for the last three days.
What else is going on? Hmm?
Oh, yeah! Politics. Very little new there though. Bush is still a corporate slave who started an illigitimate war to make up for a complete lack of either a foreign or domestic agenda. And Kerry ... well, Kerry, despite a 2000 election that left half the population of this country feeling just a tiny bit disenfrancshised, is not even capable of poling that same 50% who voted democratic.
His hang-dog face, constant brandishing of his service in Vietnam, and utter lack of substantial policy or agenda (Hey guys! Vote for me; I'm not George Bush.) is wearing thin on me already. Why the hell is he not hammering Bush on the war, the economy, civil rights abuses, erosion of international trust. He and his people are clueless. And when the Republican political machine truly starts rolling after the Democratic Convention next week, it will only get worse.
Guess what John? I'm not Bush either, but that doesn't mean anyone should vote for me. Same goes for you bucko! Get out there and say something! Anything! And don't make anymore ridiculous claims about creating 3 million jobs a year or punishing companies that outsource. It ain't going to happen and you know it! Act like you have something to lose.
It's so fucking ridiculous that this race has ever been close. It's even more ridiculous that, at this rate, Bush will be in the Whitehouse come Jan. '05. And, if you think the last four years have been bad, just wait until you see how the Bushies run this place without having to worry about relection.
Boy, it's quiet around here.

So Kerry finally put all speculation to rest and chose John Edwards as his running mate. And, of course, the Republicans have already turned out to trash the pick.
The complaints - only a few valid - are many: too young, too rich (yeah, the actually said that ... the Republicans!), too liberal, too inexperienced, too Southern, too much of an attorney, too much a Democrat, too this ... too that.
The ticket has energy for sure, probably the most in many years. Edwards is a good choice to energize the base and capture a few independents. His liberal stances, however, could be very damaging when combined with Kerry's.
The conservative base has much fuel for the months ahead. I can only hope that the energy created by Kerry's decision will be enough to get them through come November.
ANYBODY BUT BUSH IN '04!

Surreal Thursday afternoon:
At around 1:30 an announcement blares through the intercom: "May I have your attention please? May I have your attention please? Duquesne Light has asked us to shed some electricity. We are shutting off the lights on floors 25 through 54. Some elevators are not working." Message repeats. Shed electricity? Elevators not working? What?
This goes on every 10 minutes for about 40 minutes. Reaction is mixed: intrigued, annoyed, scared, fascinated, conspiritorial.
Then we are all called to the large conference room. The rumor is that do to some very unspecific electrical problems the building is being closed so we'll all be going home early. We were told to get ready to leave.
Sure enough, about 10 minutes later, the trigger is pulled. We must "evacuate."
More announcements follow, giving us directions on which floors are to leave. The people on floors 17 through 54 had to walk the stairs the 16th were the elevators are working.
On our floors turn, I exit the building. Apparently what ever had afflicted our building only infected our building. The rest of the city was going about its late afternoon rituals. It was only 3 so traffic was light and there were few peds, but all was normal.
The last time I was evacuted from a downtown Pittsburgh office building was on 9/11. Emotions weren't nearly as high today, but that memory was touched. Whatever the problem, it certainly didn't appear to be dire, as it took over an hour for the evacuation to commence.
I wonder if they'll ever tell us what happened?
