Happy Thanksgiving
Be well and truly thankful for all that you have. It's more than you think.
Here are some turkey facts for you:
- Turkeys have been around for about 10 million years
- Ben Franklin thought that the bald eagle was an immoral scavenger. He proposed the turkey as the official bird of the U.S.
- The average weight of a turkey purchased at Thanksgiving is 15 pounds
- The wild turkey can fly short distances at speeds up to 55 m.p.h.
- Commercially raised turkeys cannot fly
- Turkey breeding has caused turkey breasts to grow so large that the turkeys often fall over
- According to the 2002 census, there were 8,436 turkey farms in the United States
- 45 million turkeys are eaten every Thanksgiving in the U.S.
- 22 million are eaten for Christmas
- Only male turkeys gobble. Hens make a clicking noise
- Since 1947, the National Turkey Federation has presented a live turkey and two dressed turkeys to the President. The President does not eat the live turkey. He "pardons" it and allows it to live out its days on a historical farm
Gobble! Gobble!
