Dead Again: Orville Quietly Goes Back to His Grave
I'm not the only one who was creeped out about this freakish zombie:
Apparently, the good chemists at ConAgra got past the gee-whiz excitement generated by the creative directors at ad agency Crispin Porter & Bogusky to finally express their discomfort with the reanimation of one their most cherished brand icons, Orville Redenbacher.
Orville may have shuffled off this mortal coil in 1995, but that didn't stop the exploitation of his image by the hype monsters at Crispin Porter. His undead doppleganger haunted the airwaves for a few months with little result other than a collective "WTF?" from TV viewers.
The article quotes a VP at ConAgra calling the campaign "a leap of faith." Translation: We didn't believe in it. And frankly, "Deadenbacher" is kind of creepy, but those Subserviant Chicken guys are pretty damn persuasive.
CPs bad creative only cost them $34 million as ConAgra moved the account, as well as Slim Jim, to another agency.2 Comments | Link to this post   posted by Teddy 10:00 AM
