Karma? Come Uppence? Just Desserts?
Enron founder Kenneth "Kenny Boy" Lay died this morning in Aspen, CO.
Lay and former Enron CEO, Jeff Skilling, were found guilty of multiple counts of fraund, conspiracy, and insider trading for their roles in the meteoric rise and ultimate collapse of Enron, destroying billions in shareholder value and employee pensions. Along the way the enriched themselves with hundreds of millions of dollars of stock options that were artificially inflated because of their criminal mismanagement of their company.
Lay was facing many years behind bars for his role in the scheme. Many would say that his death is a just reward for the harm that he and his cohorts created. I disagree.
A just reward woud be for him to live a long life either 1) in financial destitution like the Enron pension holders or 2) behind bars where he would have plenty of free time to think about how his money-loving, egocentric business practices damaged tens of thousands of people--from ex-employees, to shareholders, to his own family that will forever be stained by his greed and shocking lack of morals.
Neither of these will happen now. Fortunately his heart didn't give out before the verdicts were read.
