To my uncle ...
Uncle Pete died last week. We didn't even know he was sick until just a few days before he died. Apparently, he didn't want anyone to see him sick and enfeebled. I for one wish I would have the chance. I would have thanked him for meaning more to me than I thought he did. Looking back I can see that he was always on the look out for someone else's happiness. His unexpected visits were his way of keeping tabs on everyone, to see if we had food on the table, shoes on our feet, and clothese on our backs. He listened intently when you spoke to him, so much so that it was sometimes uncomfortable. He often seemed to hang on your every word, words that he would never forget. Nor did he forget special occaisions. He was a regular at birthdays, reunions, holiday get togethers, graduations, etc.
His four children, my cousins, are as happy and well adjusted as anyone in this strange world of ours. He taught them lessons of love and life, often in ways that we found uncommon and occaisionally mean spirited. But Pete was never one to confuse love with coddling or giving with spoiling. He was able to give both of the former without ever resorting to the latter.
He was quick with a smile and warm handshake. When he told you that he was there for you, he meant it.
Thank you, uncle and good bye.
